W7 – Souffle Mascara

I’ve been reviewing quite a few budget cosmetics recently as there’s so many good ones out there. It used to be that you got what you paid for with make-up, but not any more, the developments in ingredients and formulas mean that budget make-up brands can now produce products to rival the premium beauty brands and often in packaging more suited to high-end stores than the high street.
Today I am reviewing Souffle Mascara from W7, a budget mascara that aims to ‘whip up your lashes’. You may remember that in my recent review of W7 Lipstick in Coral Dream I wasn’t keen on the packaging as I thought it looked quite cheap, but I am impressed with the packaging of this mascara and think it looks like a bit like a Maybelline or Rimmel product.
Inside the chunky bright turquoise tube there is rather a large brush with lots of bristles. W7 suggests that the large brush helps to add volume and curl, but I find it quite hard to use as I prefer thinner brushes – particularly when applying mascara to my lower lashes – and I also find that the brush does have to be wiggled around inside the tube to make sure it is evenly coated in the mascara otherwise the lashes can end up looking a bit patchy, bare in places and clumpy in others.
The mascara itself is called Blackest Black and it is a nice dense matt black. It does have to be applied very carefully given the large size of the brush otherwise it’s easy to smudge the mascara onto the lashline, but I find that 2 thin coats does the job. It gives quite a natural effect, it doesn’t really thicken or lengthen the lashes, but defines each one quite nicely and adds a bit of curl. If you’re searching for a natural-looking mascara then this might be the one for you, but if you want something much more dramatic then you’re probably best looking elsewhere.
The image above shows a ‘before and after’ of the W7 Souffle Mascara, you can see that I struggled a bit with the lower lashes (the large brush is just a bit too tricky to carefully coat the fine bottom lashes) but overall not a bad result. What do you think?
My favourite mascara is still Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, but it’s much more expensive than this one. If you’re looking for a good budget mascara (and like your mascara brushes big and thick!) then this would be a good option.
W7 Souffle Mascara is priced at £2.99, available with FREE UK delivery from Amazon.
I will be reviewing some more make-up from W7 soon, keep an eye on Beauty Best Friend for that!
