How to create breathtaking looks with glitter eyeliner

I am a massive fan of Urban Decay cosmetics, they have funky packaging, great palettes and I love the use of sparkle, glimmer and glitter within their products. Plus I discovered recently that Urban Decay is a member of Cruelty Free International, meaning that they have acquired the ‘Leaping Bunny’ stamp and their products are not tested on animals.
So I decided it was about time that I reviewed one of my favourite Urban Decay products, Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner. Available in 7 glittery shades, these sparkly eyeliners are so much fun, they’re perfect for parties and the festive season. You don’t even need to limit them to your eyes, you can use them to draw patterns onto your face and body too.
Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner is basically tiny pieces of glitter held densely within a clear base, and you apply it with the very thin brush that is inside the lid. As the brush is so tiny it only applies a few flakes of glitter at a time, so you need to build up the coverage gradually and it can take a while to complete both eyes. However it does make it really easy to keep the line neat, as long as you are patient. It gives a great sparkly eyeliner effect and really stands out when eyeshadow is kept to a minimum as the image below shows. Once it is applied the glitter really holds fast and doesn’t flake off until it is removed with make-up remover.
I’ve got the iridescent white shade, called Distortion, as pictured in the above photo. I like to wear it with a really neutral eye so that it really stands out, creating a kind of ‘ice queen’ look. You can’t tell from the image but in different lights it shimmers purple, green and blue too. If you want a more dramatic eye look you could experiment with contrasting eyeshadow colours, and exaggerate the ‘flick’ of the eyeliner at the outer edge of the eye. If you really want to go all out with the colour then try pairing Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner with Urban Decay’s popular rainbow glittery eyeshadow palette Moondust!
I’ve also got the gold shade, called Midnight Cowboy, it works really well with blue and green eyeshadows and it has a slightly festive feel to it too. It also works really well as body glitter, in the image below I’ve drawn a design on my wrist.
I used to have the pink and purple glitter mix shade called Junkshow and used it up – it looked great paired with a grey eyeshadow. Next on my wishlist to try is the Spandex shade, it’s blue, green and purple glitter mixed together and it looks amazing, like a peacock! So dramatic.
In my opinion it’s worth investing in a glitter eyeliner rather than going for a cheap version, as the budget options can dry out. However if you really don’t want to treat yourself to Urban Decay then you may want to read my review of Collection Glam Crystals Dazzling Gel Liner.
Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner is available in 7 rich jewel colours, priced at £15 each, available from the Urban Decay website. They’re not cheap but they’re such GREAT QUALITY and they last for absolutely ages, plus they don’t dry out like the cheaper brands. If you like funky colours and something a bit different then Urban Decay is definitely the brand for you!
