How to stop your eyeshadow creasing

There is a product that can STOP your eyeshadow from creasing! It’s a little miracle and its name is Eyeshadow Primer Potion from Urban Decay, and I can’t believe I’ve spent my life up to now without it! It’s one of Urban Decay’s all-time bestselling products and coveted by makeup artists. I won’t apply my eye make-up without it now!

Eyeshadow Primer Potion is an eyelid primer that you apply before eyeshadow. It helps your eyeshadow to look more vibrant, and what’s more prevents creases for up to 24 hours. It’s a pale translucent creamy colour with a velvety texture, you only need to apply a tiny amount to cover each eyelid. I find the best way to apply it is with your finger.

Once you have applied Eyeshadow Primer Potion to your eyelids just put on your eyeshadow as usual. You’ll find that it looks more vibrant and bright than normal – the primer allows the eyeshadow to ‘cling’ and it’s pale translucent formula also brightens the eyelid underneath the eyeshadow meaning the shadow almost glows.

The swatch image below shows the Eyeshadow Primer Potion applied quite thickly so that you can see the brightening effect it has.

Now I’ve tried a few primers in my time – you may have read my recent review of Clarins Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base – but none have lived up to this Urban Decay offering. I’ve been using it for about a week and a half and I can’t imagine being without it now.

Where it really excels is preventing creasing of the eyeshadow. I have combination skin, and particularly in Summer my face can feel oily which means that after a few hours my eyeshadow all slides into the eye socket creases and I’m left with one big grimy line of eyeshadow.

The images below show a ‘before and after’ – my eyeshadow freshly applied in the morning, then what it looks like 12 hours later in the evening (apologies for the light in the bottom image, it was taken under the artificial bedroom lights).

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Before After

If you look carefully you will see that I only applied Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion to one of my eyes. The eye on the right still looks almost as fresh as it did when I first applied the eyeshadow, but the eye on the left where I didn’t apply the primer looks shiny and the eyeshadow can’t be seen apart from in the socket line where it has creased.

I also think that in the top image the eyeshadow on the right eye looks better, the grey is standing out and there is more difference between the gold and the grey shades.

These images clearly show that Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion is living up to the hype! It’s the perfect primer to apply under Urban Decay’s cult rainbow eyeshadow palette Moondust too.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Review

I think I’d go so far as to say that Eyeshadow Primer Potion is one of my all time favourite make-up products and I never apply eyeshadow without it now. The only downside is that the ingredients include several parabens, I’d love to see Urban Decay reformulate this miracle product to include more natural preservative ingredients.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion is now available in 6 shades. I use the Original but the other 5 (Eden, Minor Sin, Sin, Freebase and Caffeine) are different shades perfect for different skintones.

Eyeshadow Primer Potion is priced at £17.50 for 10ml, available from Urban Decay.

  1. I love this primer! It was the first one I purchased or more like given free when buying a naked pallette. I have to say though another good purchase would be too faced eye primer which you can buy on ASOS or beauty bay online. Works just as amazing and feels quite light on the eyelid in comparison! Xx

  2. Thanks for doing the photos – really helpful to see the difference compared to no primer!

  3. I love having the option of travel sizes to try expensive items in. This is something I’ve been wanting to try, but didn’t know if it was worth it. Thank you for the through review!

    • It’s definitely worth it! It’ll last for ages too, despite it being a travel size, as you only need to use a tiny amount. xx

    • Someone recommended the Makeup Revolution one to me, not tried it yet though. xx

  4. The primer potion is lovely. Although there are others that are cheaper that are just as good.
