The Balm Mary Lou Manizer Review

I have a bit of an addiction to highlighting powders and I’m currently searching for the perfect one. I want something really pale and shimmery, that’s buttery soft and easy to blend, with no pink or bronze tones to it. Several other beauty bloggers had recommended The Balm’s Mary-Lou Manizer to me so I thought it was about time I tried it.

If you’ve never heard of The Balm it’s a cult US brand of make-up that doesn’t take itself too seriously. All the products have quirky tongue-in-cheek names and are decorated with cool pop-art style portraits – think the US version of Soap & Glory!

Mary-Lou Manizer is a luminizing pressed powder with a gentle honey hue as you can see from the swatch image below. It gently diffuses light giving your skin a soft, subtle glow. It’s one of the paler highlighting powders that I’ve tried which I like.

The packaging is quirky and depicts a mugshot of Mary-Lou who has been arrested for being too pretty and too popular. All of The Balm’s packaging is well thought out, although I have seen evidence of people complaining that their Nude ‘tude eyeshadow palettes depict naked women.

There are several ways to use Mary-Lou Manizer – you can concentrate the powder on one area to draw attention to it, for example applying to the top of the cheekbones with a stippling brush as part of your contouring process, or you can dust a fine veil all over the face to give a gentle glow using a soft kabuki brush. I also love to use it to highlight the brow bones, using my finger I dot a little of the powder just under the arch of my eyebrow after applying my eyeshadow – it really helps to lift the brows.

The Balm Mary Lou Manizer Compact

I absolutely love this highlighter, I love the shimmery shade and also that the compact is a decent size so you can easily run a brush over it and evenly pick up the powder. I like the funky compact too although I am a bit of a sucker for a sleek plain black palette a la Chanel too.

  1. I’ve been wanting to try this for so long, it’s been recommended to me so many times. The Balm is now stocked in my local Superdrug so I may treat myself on my next shopping trip, I’ve been needing a good highlighter for a while now.

    • The shade is quite gentle and it just leaves a nice lightening effect on the skin. xx
