I’m changing my toothpaste to flouride-free JASON Powersmile

As regular readers of Beauty Best Friend will know I’m a big fan of natural beauty products, but I’ve never actually tried a natural toothpaste. When you think about it it’s really important that we know what ingredients are in our toothpastes as they go in our mouths and therefore a small percentage will end up in our stomachs – imagine just how much toothpaste you actually swallow throughout your whole lifetime! I was sent this Powersmile Toothpaste from natural care brand JASON to try out. The word ‘jason’ means ‘healer’ in Greek and the brand only selects wholesome natural ingredients for its products. Their range is free from parabens, mineral oils and sodium laureth sulfates, plus the toothpaste is fluoride-free too. Black toothpaste?

Yes, you read that right… black toothpaste! I was asked to try this out by Beverly Hills Formula and I was both intrigued and disgusted when I received it. Do you remember when Heinz launched a limited edition green ketchup a few years back? I felt the same then, some things are not meant to be a different colour! The thought of a black toothpaste is just something that’s never crossed my mind and it seems counter-intuitive to use something black to clean and whiten. Now for the sciencey bit… the reason that this toothpaste is black is because it contains activated charcoal which is known to eliminate bacteria and therefore prevent bad breath. Activated charcoal is also useful at removing tannins, these include coffee, tea and red wine, and these are the things that cause teeth to stain.
