Gentle skincare for you and your baby from Weleda

Gentle skincare for you and your baby from Weleda

So I’m very careful about what I use on a regular basis on my skin, and I’m even more careful about what I use on my baby daughter. OK, so she’s not really a baby any more (she’s pretty much a toddler at 16 months old) but ever since she was born I’ve checked the ingredients of all the products that I’ve used in her bath. For a long time we exclusively used Burt’s Bees products from their Baby Bee range which are great for young skin, but now I’m starting to branch out and try other products. I was sent this Calendula Shampoo & Body Wash from Weleda to try out, and the thing that got me most excited is that it doesn’t contain sodium laureth sulphate (SLS) which is the ingredient that causes a shampoo, shower gel or soap to lather. Instead of SLS this body wash uses coconut and sugar plant-based cleansers. SLS has always caused me a problem, making my skin dry and my scalp...

KOREAN BEAUTY Daeng Gi Meo Ri – Oriental Special Shampoo

KOREAN BEAUTY Daeng Gi Meo Ri – Oriental Special Shampoo

I am currently taking part in an initiative working with BNT News International, a global beauty/fashion/lifestyle and entertainment source based in Seoul, South Korea. I am helping BNT to promote a selection of new and exciting Korean beauty products to a UK audience, these are products that you probably won’t have seen before and some of them are really different and unique. Today I am reviewing another haircare product from Korean beauty brand Daeng Gi Meo Ri, a couple of months ago I reviewed their Ja Dam Hwa Scalp & Hair Cleansing Treatment. Daeng Gi Meo Ri specialise in herbal shampoos, conditioners and hair treatments and this is their Oriental Special Shampoo* gift pack. The box is really large and contains two bottles of the shampoo – a large 500ml pump bottle and a smaller travel sized 145ml bottle. I think this would make a really nice gift, given that it comes gift boxed. The shampoo itself is quite thick and brown. All of the ingredients and directions on the back of...

Naked – Rescue Shampoo & Conditioner

Naked – Rescue Shampoo & Conditioner

Those of you who are regular readers of Beauty Best Friend will know that I suffer from a very sensitive, itchy scalp and I am constantly on the hunt for haircare products that are natural and non-irritating but that also treat my hair well and leave it feeling soft, shiny and clean. So far my experience has generally shown me that natural, SLS-free shampoos and conditioners do not irritate the scalp as much as their chemical filled cousins, but that they do not always clean the hair as well and can leave it looking and feeling greasy, sad and lifeless. One of the first SLS-free shampoo and conditioners that I tried, back in 2013, was Mild Shampoo and Gentle Conditioner from Naked. The relief that I got from my itchy scalp was almost instant, but I did find that it didn’t remove grease and oil from my hair too well, and I had to wash my hair a lot more often. Since then I’ve tried lots of different SLS-free haircare...

Batiste Dry Shampoo – Tropical

Batiste Dry Shampoo – Tropical

I’ve reviewed a few of the different ‘flavours’ of Batiste Dry Shampoo over the past couple of years, including the Light & Blonde variety. Dry Shampoo really is a lifesaver product and I’m never without a can on my dressing table – and I always go for Batiste as it’s the original, traditional dry shampoo. If you’ve never tried dry shampoo before it absorbs grease from the surface of your hair, helping to remove the shiny look of hair that could do with a wash, and it also adds texture and volume to freshly washed hair ideal if you want to create an up-do. In my opinion Batiste is the only brand of dry shampoo to buy, it’s been around forever and there’s a variety to suit everyone. I decided to choose the Tropical scented option last week when I purchased my latest can of Batiste Dry Shampoo. It’s described as ‘coconut & exotic’ and it certainly is that! It’s very highly perfumed with coconut and smells just like a desert island!...

Benecos – Shampoo for Silky Hair

Benecos – Shampoo for Silky Hair

You may have read some of my reviews of SLS-free shampoos in the past, for example this Sensitive Shampoo from Lavera, and know that I suffer from a very sensitive and itchy scalp. I’ve narrowed the cause down to the ingredients in shampoo and conditioner and now I always choose haircare products that are free of sodium laureth sulphate (SLS) and that contain as many natural ingredients as possible. Benecos is a brand that I haven’t tried before, the name means literally means ‘good cosmetics’ – in Latin the word ‘bene’ means ‘good’. All of their products are free of parabens & silicones etc, contain 100% natural and organic ingredients and are certified vegan. I’ve been using their Shampoo for Silky Hair* for almost three weeks now, the ingredients include organic Apple Flower Extract. The shampoo is quite runny and an opaque golden colour, very much like runny honey. It has a gentle sweet scent too that I really like. The only problem is that as it’s quite runny you need...

The best shampoo for a sensitive scalp?

The best shampoo for a sensitive scalp?

Regular readers of Beauty Best Friend blog will know that I suffer from an extremely sensitive scalp which can be really itchy, and I have to be very careful what shampoo I use. I know that I’m sensitive to shampoos containing sodium laureth sulfate (also known as SLS, it’s the ingredient that makes shampoos, shower gels and soaps lather) but I’m also sensitive to some other ingredients in shampoos too – mainly fragrances. I had previously been using Rainforest Balance Shampoo and Conditioner from The Body Shop®, but I found the conditioner a bit too rich and my hair didn’t always feel totally clean after using it. So I started doing a bit of research into recommended natural shampoos – and this Sensitive Shampoo from Lavera kept coming up again and again! Several of the reviews I read said that this was the best shampoo for sensitive scalps and that it left hair feeling really clean and soft, so I decided to try it. The shampoo is a translucent...

Batiste – Dry Shampoo in Cherry

Batiste – Dry Shampoo in Cherry

I’m a massive fan of the lifesaver product that is Batiste Dry Shampoo. I have already reviewed the ‘Clean and Classic Original’ variety and the Light & Blonde variant. Today I am reviewing the fruity and cheeky Cherry fragranced version. Batiste Dry Shampoo works by absorbing the oil on the surface of the hair, you just spray it sparingly over dry hair and then style as normal – only make sure you don’t apply too much as it can leave hair looking a bit ‘talcy’. The Cherry is the same as the original one except that it has the lovely fragrance of cherries – the fragrance is fairly strong when you first spray it, but it fades quickly leaving a gentle sweet scent in your hair. The only downside with Batiste Dry Shampoo is that the spray is rather violent and loud (and scares my cats!), I would prefer a more gentle spray like you get from a hairspray can. I love the retro design on the can and the logo. Batiste Dry...
