Soft & Gentle bring out a new paraben free deodorant

Soft & Gentle bring out a new paraben free deodorant

You may have read some of the scary research recently that links parabens (a preservative ingredient found in loads of health and beauty products) with breast cancer, and whilst there is no evidence yet to prove that using parabens causes breast cancer more and more people are choosing to ditch parabens in favour of something more natural. I’m gradually trying to replace all of my old skincare and bodycare products with natural alternatives so that my body comes into contact with less parabens and other nasty chemicals. One of the types of products which seems to be very late to the natural table is deodorant, there isn’t a wide variety of paraben-free products available yet but I was really pleased to see that Soft & Gentle, a well-known household brand, had brought out this new 0% Aluminium Dry Deodorant. It’s free from parabens, allergens and aluminium and uses astringent plant extracts that shrink the sweat pores to reduce perspiration whilst natural herb sage acts as a deodoriser. Available in three...

Bee Good – Honey & Wild Water Mint 3-in-1 Cleansing Water

Bee Good – Honey & Wild Water Mint 3-in-1 Cleansing Water

All things honey and bee-related are really popular at the moment, plus it has recently been highlighted that honey has wonderful properties that help to treat and improve skin. This Bee Good Honey & Water Mint 3-in-1 Cleansing Water is made in Hampshire, UK, from the honey of British bees and other natural ingredients and contains no synthetics or parabens. This 3-in-1 Cleansing Water is a clear liquid with hardly any scent and it really does have 3 benefits – it dissolves and removes make-up, cleanses the skin like a cleanser and then tones and refreshes the skin. It should be applied to a cotton wool pad then swept over the face, with no need to rinse afterwards, and can be used morning and night. Personally I don’t like products where there is no need to rinse as I don’t like the feeling of a product being left on the skin, so I have been using it as a pre-cleanse to remove make-up before using my usual Eucerin Dermo...

RazorPit – Bump Foam

RazorPit – Bump Foam

I was recently offered the chance to try out Bump Foam* from shaving experts RazorPit. Bump Foam is different to other shaving foams and gels as it promises to prevent razor burn, bumps and ingrown hairs, plus it contains no perfumes, parabens or colourants. It is suitable for all parts of the body – face, legs, armpits and intimate areas (it refers to these as ‘private areas’ on the bottle!). The first thing I noticed about Bump Foam is that it is much more runny than regular shaving foam, almost like the creamy lather from soap, this means that it spreads onto the skin really easily. Bump Foam does have quite a clinical smell, probably due to it containing anti-bacterial properties that not only help to cleanse the skin but also keep your razor bacteria free. It’s not an unpleasant smell though. I was a bit cynical before actually shaving with it as to whether this thin foam would provide enough lubrication for the razor, but it does give...

Burt’s Bees – Lip Balm With Pink Grapefruit

Burt’s Bees – Lip Balm With Pink Grapefruit

Burt’s Bees is my favourite brand for lip balm, and for the past few months I have been using their Tinted Lip Balm in Pink Blossom (you can read that review here). However as that is now running out and it doesn’t really give lips much of a tint I have decided to try out one of Burt’s Bees’ standard Lip Balms – Lip Balm With Pink Grapefruit – as I love the scent and taste of pink grapefruit. I think that Burt’s Bees are a great natural brand, striving to produce 100% natural beauty products and they also do a lot of work to help protect bees, given that a lot of their products contain beeswax. Burt’s Bees Lip Balm With Pink Grapefruit comes in a simple twist-up bullet applicator. I have been using it for the past week, applying it in the evening just before I go to bed. When I wake in the morning my lips still feel moisturised and soft which I don’t find happens...

Monu – Illuminating Primer SPF 15

Monu – Illuminating Primer SPF 15

I was really impressed with the last Monu skincare product that I tried out, so I was really pleased to see this little sample of Illuminating Primer SPF 15 in October’s Glossybox. Monu is an ethical skincare brand, they are against animal testing and their products contain no synthetic perfumes or colours. This Illuminating Primer SPF 15 contains zinc oxide for sun protection, plus antioxidant vitamin E, and is paraben free. This primer can be worn alone as a day moisturiser, or under make-up as a primer. It contains illuminating, light reflecting particles to give the face a radiant and soft-focus finish. Monu Illuminating Primer SPF 15 is a fairly light cream with a gentle plant-y scent. It does need to be massaged in to the skin very well otherwise your face may appear slightly white until the lotion has completely sunk in, but I do really like it. I love that it contains SPF 15 and helps protect against UV damage as I never go out of the...

Ahava – DeadSea Water Mineral Body Lotion

Ahava – DeadSea Water Mineral Body Lotion

This week I was asked to try DeadSea Water Mineral Body Lotion* from Ahava. You may not have heard of Ahava before, the brand was formed in 1988 when they started doing clinical research into the powerful effects of the Dead Sea’s rich selection of minerals in facilitating skin renewal. All Ahava products are paraben free, SLS free, not tested on animals, and contain the Osmoter™ — a perfectly balanced concentrate of Dead Sea minerals that effective replenishes, rehydrates and recharges the skin. This Mineral Body Lotion is a white cream. As you can see from the image below it is ever so slightly gelatinous with a sort of lumpy texture to it and I think it is this that allows it to melt into the skin really quickly. I had expected that this Mineral Body Lotion would have some kind of natural seaweed-y smell given that it contains minerals from the Dead Sea, however it has a very strong traditional floral scent. Personally the fragrance is too strong...

Beautiful Movements – Mineral Foundation Powder

Beautiful Movements – Mineral Foundation Powder

Regular readers of Beauty Best Friend may have already read my review of Prime & Create Mixing Medium and Concealer Powder from Beautiful Movements Cosmetics (you can read that review here). Today I am reviewing Mineral Foundation Powder*, which should also be mixed with Prime & Create to form a cream foundation. Beautiful Movements used to be known as BM Beauty and one of their co-founders is stunning ex-Pussycat Doll Kimberley Wyatt. Beautiful Movements are a natural cosmetic brand and their products are free from parabens, animal products, synthetic dyes & fragrances, neither are they tested on animals. I have been using Mineral Foundation Powder in Naked, a pale colour with balanced undertones, part of the Vanilla Rose collection. Using a small white porcelain saucer and my Bobbi Brown Foundation brush I mixed a hazelnut-sized blob of Prime & Create Mixing Medium with a very fine sifting of Foundation Powder, then blended it carefully. It took me quite a while to get the consistency right and to work out...

Dr. Lipp – Original Nipple Balm For Lips

Dr. Lipp – Original Nipple Balm For Lips

Firstly, I just have to say that I hate the name of this product! It was originally formulated for breastfeeding women, which is where the name comes from, and contains 100% natural ingredients including lanolin. Original Nipple Balm For Lips probably isn’t a product that I would have purchased myself, it arrived in my September Glossybox, but I love natural products and I like the stylish grey and pink packaging so I was looking forward to trying it out. This product is the very definition of ‘multi-tasking’ – not only can it be used on lips (and nipples!) but also on dry skin, cuticles and sunburn. It can also be used with your make-up, to add gloss to the eyelids, highlight cheek bones or neaten eyebrows. You can see from the image above (apologies for the chipped paint job on the thumbnail!) how thick this balm is, I would describe it as more of a thick wax, and you only need a tiny bit for the lips. Personally I...
