Essential oils for the cold weather

Essential oils for the cold weather

I love the idea of aromatherapy and what it can achieve, being able to change your mood just by inhaling a couple of drops of plant oil, even being able to heal the body by performing a simple massage. Essential oils start from just a couple of pounds for the cheaper ones but you really need to be careful and make sure you buy good quality – some suppliers dilute their oils or take the oil from the wrong part of the plant in order to try and save costs. I’ve recently discovered Buff & Butter, suppliers of aromatherapy oils and candle-making supplies. Their 100% natural essential oils can be purchased in varying size bottles – ideal for both those who are just dipping their toe in the world of aromatherapy and practitioners who want to buy in bulk. I chose five essential oils that are ideal for the cold weather: Lavender – chances are you’ve heard about the therapeutic benefits of lavender oil already. It’s so versatile and I just...

Neal’s Yard Remedies Blogger Event, Leeds

Neal’s Yard Remedies Blogger Event, Leeds

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to the Neal’s Yard Remedies store in Victoria Quarter, Leeds, to their blogger day. Their aim was to educate bloggers from around the Yorkshire area about their natural skincare and bodycare products. I recently reviewed their amazing Mothers Bath Oil but I have to admit that this was the only product from Neal’s Yard Remedies that I’d tried so I was looking forward to finding out more. I was welcomed to the store with a glass of fizz and a selection of superb vegan canapés… The event was very informal, first of all I chatted to one of their staff (really sorry I can’t remember her name!) and she told me about the background of Neal’s Yard Remedies – starting off in the back streets of Covent Garden 30 years ago and developing into a national brand. We then discussed my skincare regime and which of their products might be right for me. One of the products she recommended was Wild Rose...

The Body Shop launch Oils Of Life

The Body Shop launch Oils Of Life

This week The Body Shop® have launched the new Oils Of Life range, a collection of skincare products that all contain a blend of three natural oils – black cumin seed oil, rosehip seed oil and camellia seed oil – known for their supreme revitalising and repairing properties on skin. I’ve been lucky enough to try out a selection of the Oils Of Life products, using them for the past week, and I’ve been pretty impressed so far. Here’s what I think… The Body Shop® Oils Of Life Intensely Revitalising Essence Lotion – this is a bi-phase lotion which means that it contains both oil and water which separate out when it has been left to stand. I think the proportion of oil to water is fairly small though as the oil only takes up a centimetre or so of space at the top of the bottle. This lotion should be used a bit like a toner, you use it on a cotton wool pad after cleansing to remove the last...

Why you shouldn’t be afraid of using oils on your skin

Why you shouldn’t be afraid of using oils on your skin

The skincare shelves are full of oils these days…. oils for cleansing, oils for moisturising, oils to be used as serums…. but a lot of people are still a bit scared of using an oil product on their skin, particularly if they have oily skin as they believe that these products will exacerbate the problem. I have combination skin, with a very oily nose and chin and dry, flaky forehead and cheeks, and have been using oil products on my skin for around 2 years now with great results. When I was younger I was very scared of using rich moisturisers and oils on my chin, convinced they would make the oiliness worse and cause spots. As a result I often didn’t apply enough moisturiser and the oiliness started to get worse – this was my skin over-compensating for the lack of moisture I was giving it. Now I understand a lot better how the skin works and I am able to treat it much more kindly. Firstly I...

Every day can be a good hair day with Alchemy

Every day can be a good hair day with Alchemy

I’ve been raving about this Grapefruit Hair Remedy from Alchemy Oils on Twitter for days now, this is an all natural product that helps nourish and condition your hair. The Grapefruit Hair Remedy is a blend of 5 natural oils – Coconut, Avocado, Almond, Castor oils which all work to promote growth, thicken hair and add a lustrous shine, plus citrusy Grapefruit oil which fights dandruff and helps keep the scalp healthy. I have thick wavy blonde hair which can get quite dry and frizzy due to over-straightening, so I like to treat it every now and again to some kind of treatment. This one sounded perfect as it only contains natural ingredients. You shouldn’t be scared of using oils, they’re great for every bit of your body and I love to use an oil on my face too, you can read all about one of my favourites here. As you can see from the ingredients list above there’s nothing else added to this hair oil, and therefore it...

Quinessence – Fantasia Mood Enhancer Vaporising Oil

Quinessence – Fantasia Mood Enhancer Vaporising Oil

I was recently given the opportunity to try out one of Quinessence’s aromatherapy oils. I chose this Fantasia Mood Enhancer Vaporising Oil, a blend of essential oils to help focus concentration whilst you are working, writing or being creative. As I am a jewellery designer I thought this blend would be perfect to help enhance my creativity and inspire me whilst writing my blog posts! Fantasia is a blend of Bergamot, Lime, Lavender and Rosemary essential oils, it does smell quite citrussy which I think must be the lime fragrance coming through. The directions say to add 4-6 drops of the Mood Enhancer to a heated vaporiser, and I have been using it in in a little ceramic vaporiser in my workshop whilst I am designing. It gives a lovely uplifting warming scent to the room, and whilst I’m not sure if I have felt more creative whilst using the oil it does definitely help to lift the spirit (especially today when it is so cold outside!). I really...

Badger Sleep Balm

Badger Sleep Balm

I’ve always had trouble getting off to sleep at night and have recently been using Badger Sleep Balm to try and help me relax at bedtime. This cute little tin contains a soft balm with a blend of essential oils that helps quiet your thoughts and clear your mind. The two main ingredients are Lavender and Bergamot oils, and all the ingredients are certified organic. I have been a rubbing a little of the Badger Sleep Balm on my temples and wrists when I turn off the light at bedtime to help me to switch off my mind and relax. The scent of the balm is lovely and soothing, you can smell the lavender but it’s not overpowering. I’ve only been using this product for a couple of weeks so far. I’m not sure if it has helped me get to sleep any faster but it definitely makes me feel relaxed and soothed. Overall a great little product and great value. Badger Sleep Balm starts at around £3.99 for...
