Get the lowdown now on emerging organic skincare brand

Get the lowdown now on emerging organic skincare brand

A few weeks ago I was contacted by new skincare brand Sapphire Organic Skincare asking if I’d try out their products. I’m such an advocate of independent natural & organic skincare brands, I don’t like using products that contain nasty chemicals – including parabens, mineral oil, sodium laureth sulphate (SLS) – these are all ingredients that I try to avoid where I can. The branding has a bit of a way to go I think. The name Sapphire doesn’t stand out,  and there are no directions on the labels explaining how to use the products. The printing on the labels smudges when you touch them with product on your hands too. What I do like though is that the ingredients are really clearly listed, and every one is natural and 100% organic. Rose Garden Soft Face Balm I love using natural moisturisers and this Rose Garden Soft Face Balm was the first Sapphire product I tried. Shea Butter is the main ingredient, plus it also contains Rosehip Oil which...

Looking for an outstanding organic moisturiser with SPF?

Looking for an outstanding organic moisturiser with SPF?

Over the past year or so I’ve been trying to replace all of my everyday skincare and bodycare products with those that are more natural, choosing organic where I can. One area where I’ve struggled a bit is with moisturiser that contains an SPF, I always try to wear an SPF on my face, even in Winter. I have feint dark pigment marks around my eyes (these got worse when I was pregnant but have thankfully calmed down a lot now) and these get much darker when I’ve been in natural daylight. My old favourite moisturiser was Clarins HydraQuench Lotion which I reviewed back in 2013 and as much as it really suited my combination skin I felt it was time to look for something a bit more natural. It took quite a bit of searching to find something that I felt I was happy to try out, as there doesn’t seem to be a lot of natural moisturisers with SPF out there to choose from. Enter Green People Day...

Soft & Gentle bring out a new paraben free deodorant

Soft & Gentle bring out a new paraben free deodorant

You may have read some of the scary research recently that links parabens (a preservative ingredient found in loads of health and beauty products) with breast cancer, and whilst there is no evidence yet to prove that using parabens causes breast cancer more and more people are choosing to ditch parabens in favour of something more natural. I’m gradually trying to replace all of my old skincare and bodycare products with natural alternatives so that my body comes into contact with less parabens and other nasty chemicals. One of the types of products which seems to be very late to the natural table is deodorant, there isn’t a wide variety of paraben-free products available yet but I was really pleased to see that Soft & Gentle, a well-known household brand, had brought out this new 0% Aluminium Dry Deodorant. It’s free from parabens, allergens and aluminium and uses astringent plant extracts that shrink the sweat pores to reduce perspiration whilst natural herb sage acts as a deodoriser. Available in three...

Get firm skin with Trilogy Firming Body Lotion

Get firm skin with Trilogy Firming Body Lotion

It’s so important to know what you’re putting on your skin. Have you ever read the ingredient list of your favourite skincare product and wondered what everything is and what it does? When I’m choosing and purchasing my own skincare and bodycare products I always look for brands that contain natural or organic ingredients and Trilogy is one of those brands that I often choose. Voted New Zealand’s no 1 skincare brand the majority of their products are designed around rosehip, a super food for the skin that helps  cells to repair themselves. Trilogy Firming Body Lotion is a body moisturiser that helps to nourish, smooth and firm the skin and improve the skin’s natural elasticity. It contains rosehip, evening primrose (aids in the regeneration of skin cells) and caffeine (has a firming effect on the skin). I’ve been using Firming Body Lotion for 2 weeks now, applying it after a bath or shower. I find that the lotion leaves skin looking quite matt, but it does feel soft...

Gentle skincare for you and your baby from Weleda

Gentle skincare for you and your baby from Weleda

So I’m very careful about what I use on a regular basis on my skin, and I’m even more careful about what I use on my baby daughter. OK, so she’s not really a baby any more (she’s pretty much a toddler at 16 months old) but ever since she was born I’ve checked the ingredients of all the products that I’ve used in her bath. For a long time we exclusively used Burt’s Bees products from their Baby Bee range which are great for young skin, but now I’m starting to branch out and try other products. I was sent this Calendula Shampoo & Body Wash from Weleda to try out, and the thing that got me most excited is that it doesn’t contain sodium laureth sulphate (SLS) which is the ingredient that causes a shampoo, shower gel or soap to lather. Instead of SLS this body wash uses coconut and sugar plant-based cleansers. SLS has always caused me a problem, making my skin dry and my scalp...

Organic anti-ageing skincare from EKIA

Organic anti-ageing skincare from EKIA

Regular readers of Beauty Best Friend will know that I’m a real advocate of natural and organic skincare. It’s so important that we know exactly what we’re putting on our skin, and the majority of the high street skincare brands display ingredient lists so long that they struggle to fit them on the packaging. Many of the preservatives and emulsifiers in skincare and make-up can actually have a negative effect on our skin and I’ve seen a definite improvement in my troubled complexion since I made the move to natural skincare. Natural skincare doesn’t mean all homemade yogurt masks and essential oils, you’re never going to find me in the kitchen whipping up a yogurt and avocado mask to smear on my face! There are a lot of established but little-known brands out there just waiting to be discovered, and I have been trying out three products from one of them. EKIA (not to be confused with the Swedish home furniture giant) is a French organic skincare brand that...

Moogoo – Oil Cleansing Method

Moogoo – Oil Cleansing Method

Apologies again that it’s been a while since I last posted. You may recall that I’d been helping out a local charity with their website? Well that is all completed now but I’ve had some other family stuff going on and with looking after my baby daughter spare time for blogging is pretty scarce at the moment. I haven’t lost my enthusiasm though and am busy planning all sorts of new posts for the future, so watch this space! Today I wanted to tell you all about a fantastic natural brand, Moogoo. Regular readers of Beauty Best Friend may recall that I reviewed their Full Cream Moisturiser last year, but having received this Oil Cleansing Method* cleanser in a goody bag from a blogger event a couple of months ago it fired up my love for them all over again! MooGoo is an Australian natural skincare brand that was first created when the founder adapted a cream used in dairy farms to help a family member with a skin...

Burts Bees – Lip Crayons

Burts Bees – Lip Crayons

If you’re a regular reader of Beauty Best Friend then you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of Burt’s Bees. I like everything that they stand for, their beeswax lip balms are second to none and I use their natural Baby Bee range on my little girl. Over the past few years they’ve progressed their lip products and now offer a range of lip colour items – their Lip Shimmer in Guava was one of the first products that I ever reviewed on my blog! Burt’s Bees Lip Crayons* are a range of 6 lip colour crayons made from 100% natural ingredients. They are infused with Shea Butter, Kendi Oil, and Jojoba Oil, and of course they include beeswax too. The chunky crayon format is one that I like but feels a bit different from the other Burt’s Bees lip products of the past. It makes the colour easy to apply, although I recommend using a lip liner first if you want a really defined lip as it can be tricky getting...
