Lip Pencils: MAC Patent Polish vs NARS Velvet Matte

Lip Pencils: MAC Patent Polish vs NARS Velvet Matte

The popularity of lip pencils and crayons is soaring, I suspect it’s because they’re just so easy to use. I’ve been trying out two new ones to see which I prefer. In the red corner we have MAC Patent Polish Lip Pencil and in the blue corner we have NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. So let’s get ready to rumble while I put them through their paces…. Although the packaging of these two is quite similar the formulation and finish of the lip colours are very different – MAC Patent Polish is a light gloss and NARS Velvet Matte has a stark matte finish. So whether you prefer your lips sheer and glossy or pigmented and matte there should be something for everyone here. MAC Patent Polish Lip Pencil – this is the first lip pencil that I’ve tried from MAC (apart from lip liner) and I’m really impressed with it. As the name suggests the finish is a very shiny gloss that gives an almost patent shine, it has the...

MAC – Lipsticks in Japanese Maple & Tanarama

MAC – Lipsticks in Japanese Maple & Tanarama

There’s something about MAC lipsticks that I just love and I’m not sure what it is. I think it’s maybe the way they are displayed in the shop with all of the shades clearly on view, tempting you to have a look? Or the fact that there are so many shades and finishes to try? Or that the little black bullets look so smooth and sleek? Well whatever it is there is definitely something about a MAC lipstick that just makes you want to buy it, and collect more and more! My most recent purchases were this Cremesheen Lipstick in Japanese Maple and Frost Lipstick in Tanarama… Japanese Maple – There are currently 26 different shades of Cremesheen finish Lipstick, I chose Japanese Maple as I was looking for a nude brown shade and I’d read lots of positive reviews about it. Japanese Maple is a pale nude brown shade with a very slight shimmer, and I love the creamy texture you get from the Cremesheen finish lipsticks. In the...

The hunt for the perfect pink lipstick #8

The hunt for the perfect pink lipstick #8

Welcome to the eighth episode of ‘The hunt for the perfect pink lipstick’! I am on the hunt… the hunt for the perfect pink lipstick that is ‘MLBB’ or ‘my lips but better’. You know, the sort of colour that looks from a distance like you’re not wearing lipstick, like you just have naturally pink, plump perfect lips. The sort of colour you can just slick on from the tube and doesn’t need painstaking application with liner and lipbrush. The sort of colour that looks like ‘my lips, but better’. Today I am reviewing MAC Frost Lipstick in Angel. I love MAC make-up, I love the wide choice of lipstick colours that they have available and I love the way that the testers are displayed in the shop so that you can see the real colour of each lipstick and try it out. I like to do my research before purchasing a new MAC lipstick, searching on the internet for swatch images and reviews of colours that I think...

MAC – Lip Pencil in Hip N Happy

MAC – Lip Pencil in Hip N Happy

Well today has been lovely and bright and sunny and feels just like the first day of Spring. So I’m bringing you a review of a lovely pink Lip Pencil from MAC to help get everyone into the Spring spirit! A few months ago I wrote a review of Clarins Lipliner Pencils in Bay Rose and Chocolate, and talked about how lip pencils had become a bit uncool. Since then I’ve been trying to increase my collection of lip pencils (which was woefully pathetic in size compared to my collection of lipsticks!) and I recently treated myself to this lovely Lip Pencil in Hip N Happy from MAC. MAC has such a great selection of Lip Pencil colours available and whilst they’re not cheap they are good quality. This pencil is neither hard nor soft, the perfect consistency to use around the delicate lip area, and you can use it just to line the lips or also to fill in the lips to provide a long-lasting base for your...

MAC – Lash 20 & Duo Adhesive Review

MAC – Lash 20 & Duo Adhesive Review

These are my favourite false lashes and they’re Lash 20 from MAC. I’ve been wearing these for a few years now (well, not this actual same pair!) whenever I have a special event to go to – usually weddings, parties and Christmas. Lash 20 is a bit different from your usual falsies as they’re only a half lash really, designed to wear on the outside half of your lashline. This makes them a bit easier to apply as there’s not as much of them to position, and they give a beautiful black sweeping lash effect – but they don’t look too artificial. As with all of MAC’s false lashes, Lash 20 come packaged on a white plastic tray, in a little clear perspex sleeve which keeps the lashes safe and protected when you’re not wearing them. They don’t come with any lash glue, so I use MAC Duo Lash Adhesive which you have to buy separately. It’s not cheap, but it’s quite a big 14g tube and lasts for...

MAC – Lipstick in Flamingo

MAC – Lipstick in Flamingo

I’m not sure what it is about MAC lipsticks that makes them so appealing… They’re far from the cheapest lipsticks around, and although the simple sleek black tubes look good there are better looking lipsticks out there. Perhaps it is the way they are displayed in the shop with all of the shades clearly on view, tempting you to have a look? Or the fact that there are so many shades and finishes to try? Well whatever it is there is definitely something about a MAC lipstick that just makes you want to buy it, and collect more and more! My most recent purchase was this Lustre Lipstick in Flamingo. There are currently 28 different shades of Lustre finish Lipstick, I chose Flamingo as I was looking for a coral shade but didn’t want to go too orange. Flamingo is a corally pink shade, very bright – almost neon – with a lovely sheen to it. You can see from the swatch image below that it is glossy and...

Mac – Eyeshadow in Cork

Mac – Eyeshadow in Cork

This Mac eyeshadow in Cork is a mid brown colour, it falls under Mac’s satin finish collection but I would say the colour is fairly matt. As with all of Mac’s pressed powder eyeshadow pots it is good quality, there is no powder drop off under the eyes and it applies really smoothly. This brown Cork colour blends really well, use with a stiff stubby brush to apply into the socket of your eye – I use Mac’s 219 Pencil Brush. I actually wore this colour on my wedding day a couple of years ago, in the socket of my eye (along with a shimmery cream colour over all of my eye area and then a dark grey at the outer corner of my eyelids). As this Cork eyeshadow shade is rather neutral it will go with lots of other colours – try it with greens or purples and blend it really well. From the swatch image below you can see that the colour isn’t too dark, but if you layer it on then it does...

Mac – Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35

Mac – Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35

I have recently been trialling Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35 from Mac, for use under my eyes. I don’t have dark circles as such, but I do get patches of  uneven pigmentation just below my eyes and above my cheekbones which gets worse when I have been in the sun. I always wear a moisturiser with SPF during the day which does help to stop these patches from getting darker, but it doesn’t completely prevent them, so I like to use a concealer to help cover up the patches. This concealer is available in 15 shades, I chose shade NC20 which is one of the paler ones. I do prefer thick pressed concealers to the thinner more runny ones as I find it easier to get a good coverage. I gently press it onto my under-eye area using my ring finger, and then blend gently. I find that this Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35 gives a really good finish and lasts all day without creasing. I have tried it to...
