Max Factor – Velvet Volume False Lash Effect Mascara

Max Factor – Velvet Volume False Lash Effect Mascara

Max Factor is one of my go-to brands for mascara, for years I wore their 2000 Calorie Mascara before discovering False Lash Effect Mascara which then became my favourite. Max Factor mascaras are so simple and un-fancy, they do what they’re supposed to with a minimum of fuss, and this new Velvet Volume False Lash Effect Mascara* is no different. Velvet Volume is different because it’s an anti-brittle mousse formula containing natural beeswax so it doesn’t leave lashes feeling brittle and stiff. The wand has very short plastic bristles that are quite widely spaced and has been designed to catch every lash, no matter how short or fine. I’ve been using new Velvet Volume Mascara for a couple of weeks now and I really like it. It’s very black and I find it easy to coat all of my lashes using the plastic bristles. I do find however that I need to add a couple of coats in order to get the dense dramatic coverage that I like, otherwise my...

KISS Cosmetics – Beyond Limitations Mascara

KISS Cosmetics – Beyond Limitations Mascara

You’d be forgiven if you haven’t heard of KISS Cosmetics before as they only launched a few weeks ago. They’ve been working really closely with beauty bloggers here in the UK to get their opinions and ideas on everything from developing packaging to finalising lipstick colours, I think this is a great idea as beauty bloggers are experts in this field and they’ve generally tried hundreds of different make-up products. KISS Cosmetics will be predominantly lip focused, so far the 4 products that they’ve launched are a Lip Scrub, brightly coloured KISStick lipsticks, shiny Lip Vinyl glosses and Locked Lips top coat. However on Thursday 28th May KISS Cosmetics are due to launch their next product, Beyond Limitations Mascara*, and I’ve been lucky enough to be one of the first people to try it out! Beyond Limitations is a paraben-free black mascara which aims to define and lengthen lashes. The brush is quite large and it’s flat along the bottom and curved along the top…. KISS Cosmetics call it ‘turbine shaped’...

Animal Napa Ankle Strap Sandals

Animal Napa Ankle Strap Sandals

I’ve got another fashion review for you today, just in time for the lovely Summer weather. The flipflop reviews that I did last Summer were really popular, so I was lucky enough to be sent this pair of Animal Napa Ankle Strap Sandals* to review for you. I’m not usually one to wear flip flops as I sometimes find that the toe post rubs between my toes, so I chose the Napa Ankle Strap Sandal as it has ankle straps also so there’s not as much pressure between the toes. The Animal Napa Ankle Strap Sandals are a flat flip flop with a beige upper sole and two soft black leather straps – one regular flipflop style strap that covers the front of the foot and passes between the toes, and another at the back that cross over around the ankle and fastens with a buckle, plus a thick strip of leather that covers the heel a bit more like you get with a regular sandal. There is a bronze...

KISS – Gel Fantasy Nails

KISS – Gel Fantasy Nails

It was my birthday yesterday and to celebrate I thought I’d try out these Gel Fantasy* false nails from KISS. It’s ages since I’ve had nails this long, and whilst it does feel very glamorous I’d forgotten how difficult it is to do everyday tasks like type on a keyboard and open cans! Gel Fantasy are ready to wear stick-on false nails with a shiny gel-like finish. I am wearing the ‘Freshen Up’ style, a glossy black with tiny flecks of holographic glitter and large hexagons of silver glitter. The nails themselves are very long, thick plastic with a shiny clear coating, and whilst I’m not totally convinced they look like gel nails they do look very good. The pack contains 24 nails in varying sizes, a file, a wooden stick, both glue and adhesive pads and full instructions. I like the fact that you can choose how you want to apply the nails – either using traditional nail glue or the pads – I went for the glue...

Lancome – Hypnose Star Mascara

Lancome – Hypnose Star Mascara

Now I have briefly reviewed this mascara before, a year ago, when I compared Lancôme Hypnose Mascara vs Hypnose Star Mascara, and I really liked it. The Christmas tree shaped brush aims to effortlessly coat the lashes and to enhance their natural curl. The thin pointy end of the brush is really great for painting those fine, short inner lashes too, ensuring you cover every part of every lash. You can see from the image below that my lashes look well coated, and the upper lashes have a lovely, natural upward curl. One of the things that I love about Lancôme Hypnose Star Mascara (well, all of the Hypnose mascara range really) is that it doesn’t smudge underneath my eyes – something that I experience with a lot of mascaras. I’ve been using the black shade which is called ‘Noir Midnight’, it’s also available in Sparkling Brown. I like the glitter effect on the bottom of the mascara tube, although it’s a bit tricky to photograph! I love Lancôme’s...

The Body Shop – Sparkling Black Mascara

The Body Shop – Sparkling Black Mascara

Another Christmassy offering from The Body Shop®, this one is Sparkling Black Mascara* – a regular black mascara with a glittery twist from The Body Shop® new Christmas collection. Sparkling Black Mascara is a black mascara with tiny flecks of silver glitter suspended in it, you can see the glittery specks on the brush in the image above. The brush is very thin with not many bristles and I find it quite difficult to gather much of the product up on it in the tube – I really have to stir the brush round the tube to pick it up. It’s therefore quite difficult to get a lot of the mascara on the lashes, I can only manage to get a really thin covering onto my eyelashes. As you can see from the image above it nicely coats each lash in a thin layer, but it really doesn’t thicken or lengthen the lashes. My eyelashes are quite fair (unless I have them tinted) so this mascara from The Body...

Step-by-step guide to the perfect eyeliner

Step-by-step guide to the perfect eyeliner

You may have read my post recently about the launch of Essence make-up in the UK, a fantastically affordable range of make-up exclusive to Wilkinsons. Well here is another of their amazing budget make-up products – the 2in1 Eyeliner Pen. Currently only available in black, this liquid eyeliner pen has 2 felt-tip type nibs – one thin and pointed, and the other thick with a flat nib a bit like a calligraphy pen. I love anything that is multi-use and this liquid eyeliner doesn’t disappoint. The image below shows the thin nib: The image below shows the thick nib: You can use each nib to create a different eye look, or you can use them together to create a look. The thick nib would be perfect to create a dramatic 1960s style eye with no eyeshadow, just a thick line of black liner that wings up to a cats eye and lots of black mascara. The swatch image below shows clearly the line that each nib gives: The liner...

W7 – Souffle Mascara

W7 – Souffle Mascara

I’ve been reviewing quite a few budget cosmetics recently as there’s so many good ones out there. It used to be that you got what you paid for with make-up, but not any more, the developments in ingredients and formulas mean that budget make-up brands can now produce products to rival the premium beauty brands and often in packaging more suited to high-end stores than the high street. Today I am reviewing Souffle Mascara from W7, a budget mascara that aims to ‘whip up your lashes’. You may remember that in my recent review of W7 Lipstick in Coral Dream I wasn’t keen on the packaging as I thought it looked quite cheap, but I am impressed with the packaging of this mascara and think it looks like a bit like a Maybelline or Rimmel product. Inside the chunky bright turquoise tube there is rather a large brush with lots of bristles. W7 suggests that the large brush helps to add volume and curl, but I find it quite...
