Stay safe in the sun

Here in the UK our Summer weather can be mixed, with the dull rainy days often outnumbering the sunny ones. Everyone knows how important it is to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful rays on the hot sunny days, but did you know it’s really important to protect your skin from the sun all year round? Even on cloudy days the UVA and UVB rays from the sun reach our skin and contribute to premature ageing and wrinkling at best…. and skin cancer at worst.
There are loads of ways to help protect skin from the sun, here are just a few suggestions…
I always wear a day moisturiser that contains SPF15 or higher to help protect my face from the sun when I’m out and about. So many women spend a fortune on moisturiser that promises to delay aging and help keep them looking young, yet they don’t realise that without SPF the sun is prematurely aging their skin. There are more and more make-up products available containing SPF these days too, Shiseido Perfect Hydrating BB Cream (priced from £32 for 30ml) contains SPF30 to help protect your face from the sun every day. It’s light with an oil-free texture and Shiseido recommend applying approximately 1 teaspoonful to cover the whole face . It’s a great way of protecting your skin from the sun every day of the year… and also a great product to take with you when you go on holiday, so you can still wear make-up while you’re on the beach.
It’s really easy to forget certain areas of the body when applying sun protection…. necks, hands, lips and ears are often missed when we use SPF and these places can often start to show our age before our face. Ensure you always apply your SPF moisturiser to neck and ears every morning, and there are lots of lip products available that contain SPF. Make sure you choose a handcream that contains sun protection to prevent your hands from giving away your real age! I like Clinique Even Better Dark Spot Correcting Hand Cream (priced at £25 for 75ml) which contains SPF15, not only does it protect your hands from the sun, it also helps to fade any existing dark spots.
Clothing can also help protect our skin from the sun, make sure you cover up when the weather is sunny and choose large stylish sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun too. It doesn’t matter how dark your skin is either, all skin types and shades are vulnerable to the ageing effects of the sun.
If you simply can’t live without a tan then fake it! It’s much better for the skin than tanning by the sun and there are so many great products out there whatever type of tan you want. Fake Bake is one of my favourite brands for fake tanning, their Original Self Tanning Lotion (priced at £26.95 for 170ml) is really easy to apply and gives a great long lasting streak-free result.
So next time you’re choosing a new moisturiser or other skincare product remember to choose one that contains SPF 15 or higher to help protect your skin from the sun all year round. You’ll be doing your skin a huge favour, and helping to prevent premature aging and possibly skin cancer.
