Nicky Clarke Instant Calmer Review

This Instant Calmer from Nicky Clarke’s styling range came in my Editor’s Picks collection box from Latest in Beauty. I’m not generally a big user of styling products – a squirt of Frizz Ease serum usually does me fine – but I have used this a few times now and am pleased with the results.

This product is described as a ‘Sleek Soften Shine Balm’ and it aims to smooth and control hair for a sleek finish. It contains Argan Oil and avocado extract, ingredients which are both well known for their hair-smoothing properties.

I have fairly thick, wavy blonde hair which can either be straightened poker-straight or scrunched to give spiral curls. Unfortunately whichever style I go for I always suffer from the dreaded frizz – made worse by damp or humid weather – so a smoothing hair product is a must for me.

I would describe this product as a clear gel than a balm, as you can see from the image above. Unlike many smoothing serums this product doesn’t feel oily or greasy at all, and I have been applying a small blob to my palms before distributing it evenly through my damp hair. Once dried and straightened my hair is smooth with no frizz although it does have a lot more volume than when I use a serum. I have also found that after a couple of days my hair feels much less greasy than when I have been using a serum, which is a bonus. I haven’t yet tried this product with my hair curly so I’m not sure if it works as well as it does with straight hair, but it definitely does ‘Sleek Soften and Shine’!

So overall my verdict would be… if you want a product that smoothes frizz and banishes grease but without losing volume, then try Nicky Clarke’s Instant Calmer. If you prefer your hair smooth and flat then go for a serum, but you may need to wash your hair more often. I will be saving this product for special occasions when I know I want more volume in my hair, but for everyday use I will probably stick with a serum.

Instant Calmer is priced at £12 for a 100ml tube and is available from Nicky Clarke.
