Maybelline – Color Show Polka Dots

There are so many special effects nail varnishes about at the moment that I’ve started to not notice them quite as much, but this funky speckled varnish caught my eye in Superdrug on Tuesday – Maybelline isn’t a brand I normally look at, but I’m so glad I did! I’ve got a bit bored of having to match a glitter polish with a complimentary shiny ‘gelly’ colour varnish, but these new Polka Dots nail paints from Maybelline do that all for you!
The range is available in 4 colours, I chose ‘Speckled Pink’ as it was the brightest (the other three colours are a black, a turquoise and a dark blue). The background colour is a shiny ‘gel-like’ fuchsia pink colour and suspended inside are flecks of black and white matt-coloured ‘glitter’ pieces in various sizes. I use the word ‘glitter’ in inverted commas as the flecks aren’t sparkly, so I’m not sure if they can really be called glitter, but they give a great effect and stand out well against their pink backdrop.
This special effects nail varnish has fairly good staying power too, especially when compared against a do-it-yourself version created by applying a couple of coats of coloured polish, then 2 coats of glitter followed by another coat of colour – when you add so many coats it makes the colour prone to chipping. The top photo was created by just using 2 coats of the Color Show Polka Dots polish and I think it creates a great effect, but you could add an extra third coat for even greater effect.
At only £2.99 for 7ml this Maybelline Color Show Polka Dots nail varnish in Speckled Pink is great value, especially when there are so many expensive versions out there. It is available from Superdrug where they currently have a 3 for 2 offer on across all cosmetics. I would definitely buy this again, and would like to see Maybelline bring out some more colours, a bright orange would be a great addition to the range.
