Maybelline – Brow Drama in Dark Brown

Despite having blonde hair I do like to keep my eyebrows fairly dark, and my eyebrow product of choice is usually Chanel’s Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Noir Cendre (you can read my review of that product here). I like to use a pencil as it’s easy to control and you can either rub it lightly on the hairs for a subtle colour or use more pressure and actually draw the colour onto the skin. So when I saw this new product from Maybelline which is actually a mascara for the eyebrows I was intrigued as to whether it would be better than a pencil or not.
The Maybelline Brow Drama looks just like any normal mascara, except that the brush has a large bulbous end which you use to brush through the eyebrow hairs and deposit the mascara onto them. The brush is very stiff and spiky too, and I did find it quite difficult to just apply the product to the hairs and not smudge it all around the edges of my eyebrows, although I think it would get easier with practice.
The shade that I have been trying out is Dark Brown, but Brow Drama does also come in Dark Blonde and Medium Brown too. You can see from the swatch image above that it has a slightly translucent gel sort of formula, not as rich as the mascara you would use on your eyelashes. Personally for me it’s a bit too pale, I do like to use black on my brows, but for anyone with a pale skintone or blonde to brown hair it is a good shade.
The image above shows how my eyebrow looks after I have used Maybelline Brow Drama in Dark Brown. I did try taking a ‘before’ photo but it didn’t come out very well, so you’ll just have to take my word for it that it has enhanced my dark blonde eyebrows nicely. But you can see a few smudges and blobs on the inner edge of the brow where I slipped with the brush. My husband actually complimented me on my make-up the first time I used this product! He said he wasn’t sure what looked different, but that I looked really nice!
Personally I don’t think this is a product that I will be using again. I’m really happy with the eyebrow pencil that I am using and I haven’t the patience to practice using a mascara brush on my brows, plus I don’t think it gives a bold enough effect for my liking. If you like your eyebrows to look soft and natural though, and have fairly pale hair or skin, then it’s definitely worth a try.
Maybelline Brow Drama is priced at £4.99 for 12ml and is available from Boots.
