Do natural deodorants really work?

During the past two to three years I’ve been slowly replacing all of my regular skincare and bodycare products with those that are organic or contain natural ingredients, reducing the amount of nasty synthetic chemicals that I’m putting onto (and therefore into) my body. Did you know that a lot of the chemicals that are put into skincare products for purposes such as preservatives, fragrances and colours can actually have a negative impact on our skin and bodies, sometimes counteracting the benefit they’re supposed to be giving you?
One type of product that I’ve struggled to replace with a more natural alternative is deodorant. One of the very first products that I reviewed here on Beauty Best Friend was the Pure Natural Deodorant Stick from natural skincare brand Jason, but I experienced very disappointing results from it.
I was starting to think that maybe natural deodorants just weren’t up to it, but then a few weeks ago I was sent a Lavender & Lemongrass Natural Deodorant* from AA Skincare to try out. Also available in two other fragrances – Grapefruit & Cedarwood, and Bergamot & Aloe – this is a roll-on deodorant that contains no aluminium salts, alcohol or artificial fragrances. Instead the ingredients include a bacteria-beating yeast enzyme that neutralises odour, as well as naturally deodorising pure essential oils.
So does this Lavender & Lemongrass Natural Deodorant actually work? I’ve been using it every day for over two weeks now and I’m delighted to say that yes, it DOES work! Whilst it’s taken me a little while to get used to using a roll-on deodorant again (I had been using a Dove stick deodorant for many years) I’m really enjoying using it and it definitely helps to keep my underarms fresh and dry.
The product is quite liquidy and takes a minute or so to try once you’ve applied it so don’t rush to get dressed straight away (I’ve started to apply it before I brush my teeth which gives it a few minutes to dry off before dressing) but once it’s dry you can’t even see it, there’s no white residue and it doesn’t leave a mark on clothes either. The fragrance is really lemony and fresh when you first apply the deodorant (I can’t really smell the Lavender scent coming through though) but fades after a while which is how I like it as I don’t like the scent of my deodorant to overpower my perfume.
Overall I’m really impressed with this Natural Deodorant from AA Skincare, it works just as well as my previous Dove deodorant did but I feel happy knowing that there are no nasty chemicals entering my bloodstream from using it. I’d love to try some further products from AA Skincare, in particular their Peppermint & Ginger Uplifting Liquid Soap sounds divine!
Lavender & Lemongrass Natural Deodorant is priced at £4.94 for 50ml, available from AA Skincare.
Have you tried any natural deodorants? What did you think?
