Lip Pencils: MAC Patent Polish vs NARS Velvet Matte

Lip Pencils: MAC Patent Polish vs NARS Velvet Matte

The popularity of lip pencils and crayons is soaring, I suspect it’s because they’re just so easy to use. I’ve been trying out two new ones to see which I prefer. In the red corner we have MAC Patent Polish Lip Pencil and in the blue corner we have NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. So let’s get ready to rumble while I put them through their paces…. Although the packaging of these two is quite similar the formulation and finish of the lip colours are very different – MAC Patent Polish is a light gloss and NARS Velvet Matte has a stark matte finish. So whether you prefer your lips sheer and glossy or pigmented and matte there should be something for everyone here. MAC Patent Polish Lip Pencil – this is the first lip pencil that I’ve tried from MAC (apart from lip liner) and I’m really impressed with it. As the name suggests the finish is a very shiny gloss that gives an almost patent shine, it has the...

White & Glitter Nails

White & Glitter Nails

I purchased Barry M’s Matt White Nail Paint ages ago but thought it looked a bit stark worn on its own (it looks a little bit like you’ve painted your nails in Tipp-Ex if you don’t do it really neatly!). So I decided to pair it up with a glitter polish to create a vivid sparkly effect. I decided to use Diamond Arcade from Nails Inc, one of the most vibrant and sparkly glitter polishes that I’ve tried. Nails Inc called it a ‘Nail Jewellery Top Coat’ and when the light catches the glitter particles it really can look like you’re wearing jewellery on your nails! First I painted 2 coats of the Barry M Matt White Nail Paint over my nails and left to dry. It very opaque and works really well as a base colour – it would also work well as part of a French manicure or to create white accents in a nail art design. Then I painted a coat of the Nails Inc Diamond Arcade...

W7 – Captain Matte Foundation in Rich Tan

W7 – Captain Matte Foundation in Rich Tan

Regular readers of Beauty Best Friend may remember that I reviewed Captain Matte Foundation from budget make-up brand W7 last Summer. I really liked the coverage and the texture but the True Beige shade was far too dark for my pale skin and I’ve been tracking down a paler shade ever since. I finally managed to find a shop in York that stocks Captain Matte so that I could try out the testers and work out which was the palest shade, and ironically it’s a shade called Rich Tan! I’ve swatched it in the image below and not blended it so you can see the shade, it’s not a porcelain shade but it is quite pale with a very light tan. Captain Matte Foundation gives a perfect velvety matte finish and covers blemishes and uneven skintone without being too thick – if you have fairly clear skin you don’t really need to use a concealer with this foundation. I’ve been applying it using my fingers but it applies just as...

W7 – Captain Matte Foundation & The Fixer Face Spray

W7 – Captain Matte Foundation & The Fixer Face Spray

I’ve got another review of products from budget beauty specialists W7 for you today, it’s Captain Matte Foundation* and The Fixer Face Spray*. W7 was created in 2002 and now boasts over 500 products, unfortunately they’re not very often readily available on the high street and you may sometimes need to resort to Ebay or Amazon to track them down. I recently created a Neon Chevron French Mani look for Summer using two of W7’s nail polishes, and I was quite impressed with the products. Captain Matte Foundation – despite the cheesy name this is a rather good matte finish foundation. I was sent the True Beige shade which is far too dark for my pale skin, but in the interests of beauty blogging I did try it out and I loved it! It gives a perfect velvety matte finish and covers blemishes and uneven skintone without being too thick. I applied it using my Bobbi Brown Foundation Brush but I think it would also apply well using a...

UK Launch of Essence Make-Up

UK Launch of Essence Make-Up

Essence make-up has been around overseas since 2002 but has only recently been launched in the UK. Unfortunately I was unable to make it to their launch party but I was kindly sent a selection of Essence make-up to try. My first impressions of Essence is good, the products and packaging remind me a bit of Rimmel London and I feel they are aimed at girls aged 12-18 although they would suit anyone looking for make-up on a budget. I will be reviewing 3 Essence make-up products today, and I have another couple of items (including a glitter nail varnish) that I will be reviewing over the coming weeks. The first product that I tried was Essence Pureskin Anti-Spot Moisturizing Make-Up*, a light foundation designed to help fight spots and blackheads which contains Clearderm Complex that fights spots and also zinc and bisabolol which help speed up the healing process. The product is fairly light, a bit like a cross between a foundation and a tinted moisturiser and it...

Sleek – True Colour Lipstick in Vamp

Sleek – True Colour Lipstick in Vamp

I usually stick to the same pink and nude colours of lipstick so when I was given this Sleek True Colour Lipstick in Vamp by a friend I was a bit nervous of trying it. I have quite pale skin and I wasn’t too sure if this dark red would be too bold for me. I’ve absolutely loved the other Sleek products that I’ve tried (you can read my reviews of their Blush By 3 in Pink Lemonade and iDivine Eyeshadow Palette in Storm). I think their packaging is great too, matt black plastic and beautifully printed boxes, every time I see a Sleek palette it always makes me want to see what is inside. This True Colour Lipstick is no exception, it’s a matt black bullet tube with the Sleek logo standing out in gloss (you can just about make this out in the image above). Vamp is a dark maroony red with a matt finish, and the name ‘Vamp’ describes it perfectly. As it is a matt...

The hunt for the perfect pink lipstick #6

The hunt for the perfect pink lipstick #6

Welcome to the sixth episode of ‘The hunt for the perfect pink lipstick’! I am on the hunt… the hunt for the perfect pink lipstick that is ‘MLBB’ or ‘my lips but better’. You know, the sort of colour that looks from a distance like you’re not wearing lipstick, like you just have naturally pink, plump perfect lips. The sort of colour you can just slick on from the tube and doesn’t need painstaking application with liner and lipbrush. The sort of colour that looks like ‘my lips, but better’. Today I am reviewing Lasting Finish Matte Lipstick by Kate Moss in Shade 101 from Rimmel London. I’ve not actually used a lot of Rimmel products recently despite them being one of my favourite brands when I was a teenager. The red bullet tube is simple and has Kate Moss’ signature printed in black on the lid. I don’t really feel that Rimmel products look very premium, but I do find that the packaging is well made and sturdy...

Next – Disco Nights Matte Glitter Nail Polish

Next – Disco Nights Matte Glitter Nail Polish

I’m a bit of a sucker for a sparkly nail polish, so when I saw this by the counter in Next I couldn’t resist it. It’s called Disco Nights and described as  having a Matte Glitter finish. I love the fact that there are lots of different colours of glitter in there – pink, blue, yellow, green and silver glitter particles in different sizes. From looking at the bottle it looks like the actual polish is a whitish colour but it paints on rather clear which is fine, but I do think it would look nice painted over another colour. On the image above I had applied 2 coats of Disco Nights, plus a clear shiny top coat. Without the top coat the glitter does have a very rough texture and a dull appearance, hence it being described as Matte Glitter, but I do think I prefer it looking shiny. The polish dries fairly quickly which is great if you’re in a hurry, and I didn’t find it too...
