Lip Pencils: MAC Patent Polish vs NARS Velvet Matte

Lip Pencils: MAC Patent Polish vs NARS Velvet Matte

The popularity of lip pencils and crayons is soaring, I suspect it’s because they’re just so easy to use. I’ve been trying out two new ones to see which I prefer. In the red corner we have MAC Patent Polish Lip Pencil and in the blue corner we have NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. So let’s get ready to rumble while I put them through their paces…. Although the packaging of these two is quite similar the formulation and finish of the lip colours are very different – MAC Patent Polish is a light gloss and NARS Velvet Matte has a stark matte finish. So whether you prefer your lips sheer and glossy or pigmented and matte there should be something for everyone here. MAC Patent Polish Lip Pencil – this is the first lip pencil that I’ve tried from MAC (apart from lip liner) and I’m really impressed with it. As the name suggests the finish is a very shiny gloss that gives an almost patent shine, it has the...

Lip products from Lord & Berry

Lip products from Lord & Berry

I first heard of Lord & Berry a year or so ago and I was really tempted by the sleek black packaging and wearable shades. They seemed to drop off my radar a bit after that though, and it’s only recently that I’ve started to hear about them again. I was given the opportunity to try out a selection of their lip products and I’ve been using them for about the past 3 weeks. Read on to see what I think: First up it’s the 20100 Lipstick Pencils*, these are available in either Matte or Shiny and I’ve tried out one of each. The pencils are a bit slimmer than the usual chunky crayons that are popular at the moment and this makes it a bit easier to apply the colour straight from the pencil – although you could use a lip brush but it can be a bit tricky to coax enough colour off the slim nib and onto the brush. The pink one is called Flush, it’s...

Burts Bees – Lip Crayons

Burts Bees – Lip Crayons

If you’re a regular reader of Beauty Best Friend then you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of Burt’s Bees. I like everything that they stand for, their beeswax lip balms are second to none and I use their natural Baby Bee range on my little girl. Over the past few years they’ve progressed their lip products and now offer a range of lip colour items – their Lip Shimmer in Guava was one of the first products that I ever reviewed on my blog! Burt’s Bees Lip Crayons* are a range of 6 lip colour crayons made from 100% natural ingredients. They are infused with Shea Butter, Kendi Oil, and Jojoba Oil, and of course they include beeswax too. The chunky crayon format is one that I like but feels a bit different from the other Burt’s Bees lip products of the past. It makes the colour easy to apply, although I recommend using a lip liner first if you want a really defined lip as it can be tricky getting...

KOREAN BEAUTY 3CE – Stylenanda Duo Cover Crayon

KOREAN BEAUTY 3CE – Stylenanda Duo Cover Crayon

I am currently taking part in an initiative working with BNT News International, a global beauty/fashion/lifestyle and entertainment source based in Seoul, South Korea. I am helping BNT to promote a selection of new and exciting Korean beauty products to a UK audience, these are products that you probably won’t have seen before and some of them are really different and unique. You may have already seen some of my previous Korean beauty reviews, such as this post about Vely Vely Lipstick in Red Rouge. This is the Stylenanda Duo Cover Crayon* from 3CE, this one is shade #04 which has been created to highlight and contour. I have to admit I find something comforting and satisfying about a crayon I think it’s because they’re chunkier than a pencil and feel sturdy in the hand. This crayon is dual-purpose and has a product at either end. One is a dark beige concealer ideal for covering small blemishes or the under-eye area, or for contouring small areas, as you can apply it straight...

KOREAN BEAUTY 3 Concept Eyes – Long Wear Eye Crayon

KOREAN BEAUTY 3 Concept Eyes – Long Wear Eye Crayon

I am currently taking part in an initiative working with BNT News International, a global beauty/fashion/lifestyle and entertainment source based in Seoul, South Korea. I am helping BNT to promote a selection of new and exciting Korean beauty products to a UK audience, these are products that you probably won’t have seen before and some of them are really different and unique. You might have already read some of my previous Korean beauty special reviews, like this one of Artclass by Rodin contouring powder compact from Too Cool For School. Today I am reviewing Long Wear Eye Crayon* from 3 Concept Eyes. The Long Wear Eye Crayon is available in 7 different shades, each of them is shimmery and lustrous. I have been using the shade called Fallen, it’s a dark bronze brown shade with a great shimmer. The eye colour applies straight from the crayon and you can either leave it as it is or blend it with a brush or cotton bud to give a more gentle...

MUA – Power Pout in Irreplaceable

MUA – Power Pout in Irreplaceable

There are so many chubby lip pencils about at the moment that it’s difficult to know which ones to choose. I love Clinique’s Chubby Sticks but they’re a bit pricey so I thought I would check out MUA’s value offering in the chubby pencil market. I have already reviewed MUA’s Power Pout pencil in chic nude Rendezvous, you can read that here. Irreplaceable is a bright fuchsia pinky purple colour, it is really vibrant. I was a bit unsure about whether I could wear something so bright when I first tried it out, but as it is fairly glossy and sheer this helps to tone down the colour a little. It is lovely and buttery and moisturising and doesn’t dry out when on the lips – it stills feels soft and moisturising hours after applying it. It will be great in the Winter to help protect your lips from the cold weather. You can clearly see from the image below how glossy this colour is. The silver end of...

Clarins – Crayon Khol in Intense Blue & Platinum

Clarins – Crayon Khol in Intense Blue & Platinum

Another Clarins make-up review, this time it is the new Crayon Khol pencils in Intense Blue and Platinum*. Both are very subtle colours, I do find that Clarins make-up tends to err on the cautious side with nothing too bright or ‘in your face’. Both Crayon Khol pencils come in cardboard packaging in the classic Clarins red colour. Each pencil has a lid at each end, one end has the pencil nib the other end has a useful brush that can be used for blending and smudging the pencil colour to create different effects on the eyelid. Both Intense Blue and Platinum are quite dark colours, and give lovely dense long-lasting coverage. Intense Blue is almost a navy blue, but is a slightly softer colour than a black pencil.I have been wearing Crayon Khol in Intense Blue on my lower lash line, you can see from the image below that it is a dark colour. It would also look good inside the lower lashline, or on the upper lashline...
