  So I’m currently seven months pregnant and despite feeling really fit and healthy and having no health issues I’m a bit worried about getting stretch marks. Stretch marks are streaks or lines that appear on the skin and they’re caused by rapid expansion of the skin when the middle layer of skin (dermis) breaks in places, allowing the deeper layers to show through. They start off as pink or purple lines and eventually fade to a silvery white colour, and they’re most common on the tummy, buttocks, breasts and thighs. Stretch marks are particularly common during pregnancy (about 8 out of 10 expectant mothers get some) usually appearing from month 6 onwards, but they can also appear after sudden weight loss or gain or during puberty – around 7 out of 10 girls and 4 out of 10 boys get them during puberty according to the NHS.
